When Can Toddlers Start Coloring?
Many toddlers start scribbling with chunky crayons somewhere between their first and second birthdays; coloring “inside” shapes usually comes later, around ages 3–4, so start with free scribbling and very simple pages.

What to expect
Children develop at different speeds. Many begin by making marks and scribbles with a chunky crayon in their second year. Aiming for a particular shape — like filling a circle — tends to come later, often around ages three to four. Both stages are normal and valuable.
Getting started
- Supervise: stay close, and choose non-toxic crayons labeled for your child's age; very small children may put crayons in their mouths.
- Go big: tape a page to the table so it doesn't slide, and offer chunky or egg-shaped crayons.
- Keep it short: a few minutes is plenty.
- Praise the effort: “You used so much blue!” is more encouraging than “Stay in the lines.”
Best first pages
Choose our easy pages: one big friendly subject, very thick lines and almost no background. Animals your child already knows — a cat, a duck, a dinosaur — are great first pictures to name together.
Quick answers
What crayons are best for toddlers?
Chunky, non-toxic crayons made for young children are easiest to hold and harder to break. Always supervise toddlers while coloring.
Should I teach my toddler to color inside the lines?
There is no need to rush it. Free scribbling builds the control children need; staying inside lines tends to come naturally later.
